Crochet Heart Granny Square Tutorial 🧶
🔹 What You'll Need:
Yarn: Two colors (one for heart, one for border) – use DK or worsted weight
Hook: Usually 4mm or 5mm (check yarn label for guidance)
Scissors
Yarn needle
🔸 Step 1: Begin With a Magic Ring
1. Start by making a magic circle (adjustable loop).
2. Into the ring, chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet).
3. Make 2 more double crochets into the ring (first cluster of 3 dc).
4. Chain 2 (this forms the first corner).
5. Repeat the following three times:
3 double crochets
Chain 2 (each chain-2 space forms a corner)
6. Slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain-3 to close the round.
7. Tighten the magic ring by pulling the yarn tail.
🟢 You should now have 4 clusters of 3 dc with 4 chain-2 spaces forming a square.
🔸 Step 2: Form the Heart Shape
1. Slip stitch to the next chain-2 corner space.
2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc).
3. In the same corner space, make: 2 dc, Chain 1, 3 treble crochets (tr), Chain 1, 3 dc.
4. This forms a heart shape in one of the corners.
🧡 This step creates the heart motif — you’re building both lobes of the heart using the tall stitches (trebles).
🔸 Step 3: Finish Round With Normal Granny Clusters
1. In the next corner space, make: 3 dc, Chain 2, 3 dc.
2. Repeat in the other two corners.
3. In the side spaces between corners, add 3 dc (or 1 cluster) depending on the pattern's spacing.
4. Slip stitch to the top of the heart corner to close the round.
🔸 Step 4: Add a Border Round (Second Color Optional)
1. Join your second color (or continue with the same) in any chain-2 corner.
2. Chain 3 (counts as dc), then make: 2 dc in same space, Chain 2, 3 dc in same space (standard granny corner).
3. In each side space, make: 3 dc.
4. In each remaining corner, make: 3 dc, Chain 2, 3 dc.
5. Continue until you complete the square.
6. Slip stitch into the first dc to join the round.
7. Fasten off and weave in the ends with a yarn needle.
🔸 Optional Final Round (for Larger Squares)
You can add one more round using the same granny square pattern if you'd like to enlarge the square or make all your squares the same size.
💡 Finishing Touches
Block your square: Lightly dampen and pin it to a square shape on a soft surface, then allow it to dry. This helps the heart and square to sit flat and look even.
