Colorful Cushion pattern For Beginners
1. Materials
Yarn: Two or more colors (e.g., Color A and Color B). DK/worsted weight is common.
Hook: Typically 3 mm–4.5 mm, but use whatever suits your yarn.
Extras: Scissors, tapestry needle, stitch markers or pins.
2. The C2C Block Structure
Each “block” = ch 3 (or ch 2 for tighter work) + 3 dc (US terms).
Traditional increase uses ch 6 then 3 dc into chain chain.
3. Starting & Increasing (Bottom‑Left to Diagonal)
1. Ch 6 with Color A.
2. Dc into the 4th chain from hook, and the next 2 — you’ve made your first block.
3. Turn work
4. For each increase row:
Ch 6. 3 dc in the same ch‑3 corner space. Slip‑stitch (ss) to join into the previous row’s ch‑3 space. Ch 3, 3 dc in that same space. Repeat ss, ch 3, 3 dc until the row has one more block than previous row. Turn at end.
4. Working Across (Increasing Phase)
Continue increasing one block per row (adds both width and height diagonally).
Stop when you reach your desired cushion half-width (e.g., 17 blocks if cushion is 35×35).
5. Coloring & Color Changes
Change colors before finishing the third dc of a block:
Complete dc up to last loop, drop old color, pick up new and yarn over to pull through.
Secure by slip-stitching in next ch‑3 space.
For neatness, carry unused yarn along Wrong Side.
6. Decreasing (Top‑Right Diagonal Down)
1. Once full triangle is formed, begin decreasing rows:
Slip‑stitch across dc blocks to the next ch‑3 space. Ch 3, 3 dc in that space, ss to next ch‑3 space until one block less than previous. Slip‑stitch to finish row.
2. Repeat decreases until only one block remains.
7. Edging
With right-side facing, join Color A in a corner. Sc evenly around each block edge. In corners, work 1 hdc, ch 2, 1 hdc for a neat miter. Fasten off and weave in ends.
8. Assembly
Block the panel slightly smaller than the cushion cover (negative ease). Pin the panel RS‑side up onto pillowcase. Sew through the back loops only for clean edges. Insert cushion and enjoy!
✨ Quick Reference Table
Phase | Action | Notes |
---|---|---|
Start | Ch 6 → 3 dc in 4th ch | Creates first block |
Increase | Ch 6, 3 dc → ss → ch 3 + 3 dc | Add 1 block each row |
Color | Change on third dc, ss into ch‑3 | Carry yarn on WS |
Decrease | Ss → ch 3 + 3 dc → ss until −1 block | Build top corner down to one block |
Edge | Sc around with ch 2 corners | Creates clean border |
Finish | Block, pin to case, sew | Use back-loop method for tidy seam |
